Letter from the President

As we move into the new year, I am thrilled to share some exciting updates and developments at CCL that reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting California Community College libraries and those that work within.

Welcome to the 2024-2025 academic year! As this new year begins we are seeing a number of positive changes here at CCL. As you know we have spent a number of years giving a great deal of our focus to the Library Services Platform (LSP) and making sure that we have strong leadership and support to keep it running successfully. I am proud to say that we have created that strong infrastructure and our LSP leaders are amazing. With that said, as we visualize the coming year, I would like to think of this as the dawning of a new day at CCL.

In July I will step down as president and welcome Alison Gurganus as the new president at our annual retreat. It has been my pleasure to serve as president for almost two years and I look forward to supporting the Council of Chief Librarians in any way I can into the future. We have accomplished a great deal in the seven years that I have been involved, and I’m proud to be a part of this team of dedicated librarians from all over the state of California who have done this work.

I’d like to take a few minutes to review what the Council of Chief Librarians (CCL) has accomplished in the last few years. Many years ago (about 10 or a few more) the CCL envisioned the possibility of a shared Library Services Platform (LSP) software system and began talking with the Chancellor’s Office about the possibility. In 2017 they were awarded a one-time $6,000,000 grant to review the vendors and implement a system.

Hi all,

Thanks to the team that made the Deans and Directors meeting in Sacramento in March go so well. We had a great time coming together after missing several years and it was great to see so many friends and colleagues in one place. I look forward already to next year’s event. I hope everyone thought it worth their time to come and had safe travel to and from.

Hi all,

We are proud to announce that our communication with the Chancellor’s Office is bearing fruit. We don’t have contracts signed yet, but we have been given approval to move forward with:

Thank you to everyone who participated in our remote Deans and Directors Program this year. The large number of participants shows the strength of the CCC Library community.

Hello CCC librarians,

By Gregg Atkins, CCL Executive Director

CCL first began discussing the idea of a shared ILS almost 10 years ago!  We talked and talked and talked among ourselves.

And then we talked with others:  people in the Chancellor’s Office, technology leaders in the CCC world, stakeholders (think ASCCC, students, CIOs, the League … and so many more), other groups of libraries headed in the same direction.
