College Update

The Pierce College One Book-One Campus selection for academic year 2017-18 is Enrique’s Journey:  The Story of a Boy’s Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with his Mother, by Sonia Nazario, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning Los Angeles Times series. It is the story of a Honduran boy who braves unimaginable hardship and peril to reach his mother in the United States, riding on the top of trains from Guatemala through Mexico to the United States border.

Cuesta College has hired Ryan Cartnal as the new Dean of Library, Learning Resource, Instructional Technology & Institutional Research and Carina Love as the new Chair of Library, Learning Resources& Instructional Technology.

In November, Francis Howard returned to Laney College as a new Hourly Librarian. Francis previously worked as a Library Technician at Vista College (now Berkeley City College) before moving to San Jose to pursue an MLIS at San Jose State University. Prior to graduating, he completed an internship at Laney College. Since 2007, he has served as Senior Assistant Librarian at San Jose State University.

Finding funding for a library is never easy when the general funds keep decreasing and the previous bond Measure B funds have ended. All of the LPC librarians requested funds from Measure A from the Administration and committees. Las Positas College Executive Team (President and VPs) allocated to our library $300,000 per year for the life of the bond for library materials.

This Fall, Mission College Library started a Food for Textbook Program. It is a service to help students defray the cost of textbooks and is based on the successful program at our sister college, West Valley. Students are able to check out a textbook or calculator for the entire semester with the donation of 10 cans of food. The canned food is donated to Second Harvest Food Bank.

The Cesar Chavez Library at San Jose City College will be the proud owners of two Google Jamboards in 2018. Google's cloud-based whiteboard device will be installed the Library's small group meeting rooms. Jamboard is a terrifically intuitive system that makes it easy for small groups to collaborate, share, and save ideas. The Jamboards are intended for student use but will be available to college faculty and staff, as well.

The Merced College Library has been sponsoring several student events and clubs this fall semester. A Pumpkin Story Time for the children at our child development center was very successful, and all children left with a decorated pumpkin grown by our Aggie students as well as books checked out by their student parents. In addition, the Merced College Poetry club is advised by Karrie Bullock and they will coordinate the Poetry Slam on campus in April. The Merced College Book club, advised by Dee Near, recently visited the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas.

We are getting settled in to our new library. Reference questions are up 35% and Circulation is up 137%. It is great to see students discovering and enjoying the new facility. About 4,000 students use the library each day. With more group study rooms, wi-fi, seating, tables and outlets, this has become a popular place to be for study and hanging out between classes.

Scott Lee is the Scholar in Residence at Antelope Valley College for the 2017-2018 academic year.  This is the highest award given to faculty by our Academic Senate.  Scott is actually the second librarian to win the award.  Carolyn Burrell, the Electronic Resources Librarian, won it for the 2009-2010 academic year.

We welcome Dr. Carrie Monlux as the new Dean of Instruction to Butte College. Carrie has 26 years of teaching experience and is known for her ability to foster strong community partnerships. She will oversee the Library Services as well as Foreign Languages, Sociocultural Studies, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Study Abroad, and Technology Mediated Instruction. Carrie will be a great addition to CCL and the Northeast Region.

OPENSTAX ONLINE TEXTBOOK REVIEW COLLECTION

City College of San Francisco Library has a lot going on this academic year.  Here are a few highlights from fall semester: The Library has committed to spending a year studying the collection with an eye towards providing highly student-centered collections. As of fall semester, the Circulation Department has implemented a food for fines program.  Information about this program is accessible from the Library's website.

Elnora Kelly Tayag is the newly hired Director of Learning Commons. Elnora will support the integration of the Library, Learning Center, and other instructional services and programs within the Academic Support and Learning Technologies Division (ASLT).

Updates : We recently hired a new Reference and Instruction Librarian, Hye Chin An-Dunning. The Director of Libraries recently took on the role of supervising a new Distance Education and Instructional Design Coordinator, Matthew Calfin. The libraries began participating in Question Point during the summer semester. We have expanded our service hours at the Indio Campus Library, with reference service M-F.

Glendale Community College has a new one year contract Technical Services Librarian, Rebecca Cooling.  We have also completed the redesign of our main floor and are working to complete the rest of the library

In March, Dominique Dozier joined the library staff as the new Evening Reserve Technician.  A graduate of Laney College and CSU East Bay, Dominique worked at San Leandro Public Library for three years prior to coming to Laney.

Public Services Librarian Reginald Constant has been appointed to serve on the City of Oakland’s Library Advisory Commission.

 

Wayne Altenberg is a new reference and instruction librarian at the Los Banos campus of Merced College.  Wayne completed his M.L.I.S. degree at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.  He also has a B.A. in music composition from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Master’s degree in music theory from the University of Texas at Austin.

Lauren McFall is the new Web Services & Emerging Technologies Librarian at MiraCosta College.  Lauren has experience at both the community college and university level, having worked as a librarian at St. Mary's College of California, CSU East Bay, LA Trade Tech, and most recently at Southwestern Community College.  She was also a knowledge engineer at Ask.com for nearly 5 years and a former community college student herself.  Lauren holds an MLIS from San Jose State University and a BA & MA in Linguistics from UCLA.
