The RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California is a public policy research organization and the nation's largest think tank. From its inception in the days following World War II, RAND has focused on the nation's most pressing policy problems. At first focusing on issues of national security they later began addressing major problems of domestic policy as well including education and training, health care, criminal and civil justice, labor and population, science and technology, community development, international relations and, regional study.
As a function of its extensive research RAND created a database on California economic and public policy issues. Originally available only to RAND researchers, in early 1998 they launched a Website and a subscription-based service called RAND California. RAND California features a collection of more than 150 statistical databases covering California, with many at the county, city, and zip code level. About 30 of the databases cover all 50 U.S. states. Databases range from housing prices to crime rates to health care topics like long-term care and child abuse statistics. The site also includes an online library of public policy collections from leading California research institutions.
